Twin Cities business owner moves family to Sioux Falls with immediate positives

A spring break trip to South Dakota?

When Joe Brummel’s wife and two teenagers didn’t turn him down immediately, he knew the idea that had been brewing in his mind might have the chance to become reality.

“When COVID hit, we couldn’t help but notice that in the Twin Cities it was lockdown central and a lot of unreasonable considerations, and in South Dakota right next door, we kept hearing about a different approach,” said Brummel, who has lived in the Twin Cities most of his adult life.

“And so we just paid more and more attention to it.”

He’s the owner of two businesses – Strategic Retirement Partners, an SEC-registered investment adviser that helps employers set up group retirement plans and guides employees through using them – and Plan Sponsor Roundtable, an interactive education forum for employers that oversee and run retirement plans.

“I had built a team in the Twin Cities, and we were adding clients in the Upper Midwest, including South Dakota, and I realized South Dakota was growing, and there was an opportunity to do more here,” Brummel said. “I felt South Dakota was going to be best served by someone from my team being on the ground here, and it turned out that was me.”

But first, the spring break trip.

Instead of heading to Florida, he and his wife, RoAnna, and their high schoolers headed west.

Brummel family

“I started talking to clients and got great recommendations for places to go, and the family jumped on board,” he said. “So in March, we made a trip to the Black Hills and checked out the sights and had a ton of fun. Little did the kids know, but my wife and I were contemplating a move out here.”

Meanwhile, “the whole time we were on vacation, our son kept saying we should move to South Dakota, and we just looked at each other,” Brummel said.

Brummel family

They weren’t sure their daughter, who was heading into her senior year of high school, would feel the same, but that changed too.

“After we got home, we began having conversations with her, and she was telling us how at school things were difficult and she couldn’t wait to be done with high school and go on to college,” he said. “That gave us the confidence she’d be OK with a move, and when we told the kids what we were thinking, they said, ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’”

Brummel family

They officially made the move in mid-August, enrolling their kids at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools and connecting with the Catholic Men’s Business Fraternity, which helped Brummel meet others early on.

“I got connected with helpful, awesome people,” he said. “Including a real estate agent and an attorney to help move my business. The school has been an excellent experience and made a huge difference for our kids, helping them integrate and making sure they got settled with the right classes.”

That’s not to say there weren’t some transitional challenges. Their house in Minnesota took longer to sell than expected, and they caught COVID-19 in the middle of the move. But now, even his daughter said “she has made better friends here than she had in high school in Minnesota,” Brummel said.

“It’s just great. Quite honestly the hidden secret about South Dakota is the quality of the people. They’re just authentic.”

His daughter just found a part-time retail job and plans to stay in South Dakota for college, attending SDSU. His son is looking for a summer job and also has made good friends already, he said. After renting while house-hunting, the family just moved into a home in Harrisburg.

Brummel family

“It took us some time to get a feel for the housing market, but we found a place with almost 2 acres and a private backyard, and we’re super excited,” Brummel said.

The next steps include getting more connected to the community, especially for RoAnna as a stay-at-home mom.

“She’s still meeting people, and that can be challenging,” Brummel said. “But we recently got connected with the Newcomers Club in Sioux Falls, and we met really great people through a couple different churches, so we’re grateful for that, and meeting new people really doesn’t seem very hard to do.”

Brummel also plans to hold an education session through his business in the coming months in Sioux Falls.

“This is considered a smaller market for something like that, and to my knowledge there’s never been any kind of fiduciary training program here like it in South Dakota, so it should be a completely new service,” he said.

“I have talked to a variety of local business leaders about this, and everyone seems to be excited that we are bringing it here.”

He’s also learned he’s the only Certified 401(k) Professional in the state, according to the Retirement Advisor University, which provides the training and certification for the designation.

“Specialists in just about every field tend to offer and do more than generalists, with better results to show for it,” he said. “This is a big reason I am excited to be in South Dakota now, to help companies here better manage their retirement plans and to improve results for their companies, leadership and employees.”

The family’s experience is indicative of many newcomers in Sioux Falls, said Denise Guzzetta, vice president of talent and workforce development for the Sioux Falls Development Foundation.

“We especially continue to see a Minnesota migration as families from the Twin Cities and beyond discover there’s a different life just a short drive away,” she said.

“They’re moving businesses, settling their kids in great schools, connecting with civic organizations and loving their new neighborhoods. We’re thrilled the Brummel family is finding the same experience.”

The culture of Sioux Falls and South Dakota immediately stood out and continue to, Brummel added.

“There are awesome people in Minnesota, but here the people are just different. I quickly felt at home having grown up on a farm in Wisconsin where there’s the same mentality in South Dakota that you help each other out, you do what you can and be a real person and do the right thing,” he said.

“I’m happy to say it wasn’t just a honeymoon feeling – the people here are great, and I think they are the best and most underrated part of South Dakota.”

Foundation Park attracts continued interest as businesses keep opening

The most recent major project to locate at Foundation Park is hiring – and other businesses could be following.

FedEx Ground opened its 340,000-square-foot distribution center in the northwest Sioux Falls development park last fall and employs a mix of full- and part-time team members.

The operation also contracts for package pickup and delivery services with local service provider businesses that hire locally for driver, helper, manager and other positions.

“The site was chosen because of its ease of access to major highways, proximity to customers’ distribution centers and a strong local community workforce for recruiting employees,” said Dana Hardek, an external senior communications specialist for FedEx Ground.

FedEx is the tenant for the building, which was developed by Indianapolis-based Scannell Properties.

“As one of the largest industrial developers in the country, Scannell Properties is accustomed to working with a wide array of land sellers and municipalities. In the case of this project, we could not have asked for a better pairing,” said Tom McCary, director of development for Scannell.

“It was a privilege to work with both the city of Sioux Falls and the Sioux Falls Development Foundation; both were instrumental in getting this project approved and completed on such a fast timetable. We sincerely hope to have more projects in Sioux Falls in the future.”

The FedEx project is an example of the type of business the Sioux Falls Development Foundation envisioned at Foundation Park when it was developed in 2016, president and CEO Bob Mundt said.

“Our two targets going into this were large warehousing and distribution facilities along with manufacturing, which will be out there shortly,” he said. “To offer a first-class employer like FedEx a place to expand in Sioux Falls, hire more people and provide competitive positions with excellent long-term career prospects is exactly what we’re trying to achieve with this park.”

FedEx Ground is hiring in the Sioux Falls area for package handler positions.

In addition to competitive wages and a flexible schedule, the company’s benefits include medical, dental, vision, paid time off and parental leave, as well as tuition reimbursement after a minimum threshold of service.

Tessier’s Inc. also is settling into its new location at Foundation Park.

The Mitchell-based mechanical contractor and metal fabrication company built a 42,000-square-foot office and shop complex on a 5-acre parcel.

Tessiers in Foundation Park Sioux Falls SD

Tessier’s provides heating, ventilating, air conditioning and environmental control services.

“It’s working very well,” president Rashid Kadir said. “The location is very good. To be part of the massive buildings around us is a wonderful feeling. It’s easy access to I-29, easy access to I-90, and everything is as expected or better.”

He estimates 60 people work at the new location, including the office and shop, with 80 in the overall Sioux Falls area. To learn more about openings, click here.

“And we are desperately in need of more workforce, both professional and field service. You name it, we need it,” Kadir said. “The majority of those would work out of this building. To have something new and exciting like this to offer them is just amazing. I think other businesses also would appreciate the location.”

Tessiers in Foundation Park Sioux Falls SD

Muth Electric and Muth Technology also will be under construction at Foundation Park yet this year on their new Sioux Falls location, Mundt said.

“And we continue to see interest from others in distribution and light manufacturing on our remaining lots on the south portion of the park,” he said. “We have multiple sites with rail remaining, and we’re looking at all our remaining land on the south end to ensure we’re focused in on its current highest and best use.”

The Development Foundation also is working on developing the north side of the park, making it a build-ready site.

“We’re roughing in roads and will have hard-surface roads there next year,” Mundt said.

That’s where CJ Foods is moving forward and likely will break ground on its Asian food production facility yet this year, Mundt said.

“We’re actively working with CJ, and they’re designing the facility now to make sure they can accommodate their growth and expansion,” he said.

The Development Foundation also continues to work with future prospects, he said.

“They’re a little more conservative right now with interest rates and inflation and uncertainty in the market, so they’re stepping back and really taking a look at projects to make sure they can get them in on budget, so it’s taking more time to make decisions, but we still are working through the process with multiple prospects.”

Sioux Falls metro building homes at 5th fastest rate in the nation

Lately, headlines of housing shortages, inflation, and interest rates have homebuyers wondering if a slowdown will happen any time soon. If you find yourself in that boat, Sioux Falls might be the place for you! According to a recent report from Inspection Support Network, the Sioux Falls Metro is building houses at the 5th fastest rate in America among small metros!

“To determine the metros building the most homes, researchers at Inspection Support Network analyzed the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Zillow,” the release said. “The researchers ranked metro areas according to the number of new housing units authorized per 1,000 existing homes in 2021. In the event of a tie, the metro with higher total new housing units authorized in 2021 was ranked higher.”

It’s likely the most valuable day you’ll invest in workforce development all year – so register now for this fall’s fifth annual WIN in Workforce Summit.

Three professional tracks will guide the day, which will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center.

“We talk about talent development, talent attraction, and then we take the issues of the day and talk about best practices,” said Denise Guzzetta, vice president of talent and workforce development for the Sioux Falls Development Foundation.

“And it’s just amazing. This year, the content is going to be fantastic, and we’re also going to have a lot of different companies sharing their journeys and how they have evolved their programs so they can continue to build on their growth. We see that in our business community. We’ve been very successful regardless of the environment.”

Retired NFL running back Justin Forsett will be the keynote speaker. Forsett, founder and CEO of personal care company Hustle Clean and a co-host on LeBron James’ Uninterrupted podcast, will kick off the event with a message on transforming your career path.

“He went on ‘Shark Tank,’ he pitched an idea, and now his product is sold throughout Walmart and Target, so just a great inspirational message from someone who started homeless, had an opportunity to focus on a talent — sports — and took that talent and realized he wanted to make a career change and did that successfully,” Guzzetta said.

Examples of topics include workforce reimagined, collegiate engagement made easy, how to attract and maintain a diverse workforce, reinvention and culture.

The Sioux Falls Development Foundation is an approved recertification provider from the Society for Human Resource Management.

“Human resource professionals who attend WIN in Workforce will earn nine professional development credits, which is wonderful, and the networking benefit is huge,” Guzzetta said. “WIN is just a great place to engage and really grow. Sioux Empire Development Park VIII East sees high demand

Sioux Empire Development Park VIII East is located in the northeast part of Sioux Falls, east of I-229 and south of 60th Street North. The Foundation has seen a flurry of activity over the last couple of months in this industrial park. Some of this activity is due to the supply of and demand for smaller parcels; however, the interest is also tied to the ease of connectivity to Veterans Parkway and I-90.

WF Assets, LLC. acquired 3.46 acres of land in SEDP VIII East. They plan to break ground this summer on a 12,000 square foot contractor’s shop as well as a separate 2,400-square foot office building. They hope to wrap up construction and occupy the building in the spring of 2023.

Crusher Investments Company acquired 5.5 acres of land in SEDP VIII East at the corner of Wilcox and Producer Lane. They will be building a 40,000-square foot industrial facility. They intend to break ground on this project in the summer of 2022 and complete construction by summer 2023.

Northern Properties, LLC. acquired 3.5 acres of land in SEDP VIII East. They plan to build two 20,000-square foot buildings on the site with Phase 1 beginning in the fall of 2022. The initial building will be complete by the summer/fall 2023. They intend to occupy part of the first building and sublease space to interested tenants. They will entertain industrial space as small as 4,000 square feet.

Soukup Construction acquired 1.28 acres of land in SEDP VIII East. This small parcel is adjacent to current land owned by the company.

The last remaining parcel available in SEDP VIII East is 4 acres. If your company has an interest in a parcel this size, reach out to Dean Dziedzic, Vice President of Economic Development, at 605.339.0103 or deand@siouxfalls.com.

President’s Report: Partnerships Are Critical for Success

No organization or business can survive without valuable partnerships that help them succeed in accomplishing their goals and objectives. Each of us have those critical partners that provide products, services, consulting, and advice to help us sell, market, manage, and succeed in our business.

The Sioux Falls Development Foundation is no different, and we’d like to give a shout out to some of our critical partners.

City of Sioux Falls – The City of Sioux Falls, including the Mayor, City Council, and staff, are instrumental. They provide guidance, funding, and approvals for a lot of the projects we undertake. Their expertise in infrastructure, incentives, planning/zoning, permitting and resolutions/ordinances help us comply with local laws.

Governor’s Office of Economic Development – GOED provides data and information for our prospects, guidance on funding sources and incentives, permitting assistance, and legislative involvement. The State also coordinates coop advertising and marketing programs to stretch our local dollar and expand our market reach.

Broker Partners – Our broker partners, NAI and Bender Commercial, help market our industrial property, identify local companies looking to expand, and keep us abreast of the latest trends in commercial and industrial real estate development.

Greater Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce – The Chamber allows us to participate in key areas including public policy and advocacy, Leadership Sioux Falls training, the Young Professionals Network, community development, housing and airport improvement efforts, as well as general quality of life programs.

Startup Sioux Falls – SUSF partners with us to build and promote the entrepreneurial community in the Sioux Falls region. By supporting SUSF through the Forward Sioux Falls initiatives, Sioux Falls has become a rising star in the national entrepreneurial scene.

Local School Districts – Leveraging our Career Connections program as well as our STEM initiatives, local school districts play a vital role in engaging students in career exploration, job shadow, apprenticeship and internship opportunities available with local companies. This allows us to keep our kids here and employ them early.

Higher Education – Partnerships with STC, Augustana, USF, SDSU, USD, and DSU have supported our Talent Recruitment Programs as well as STC’s Health Sciences Clinical Simulation Center, the DSU Cyber Campus, the USD Discovery District Bio-Sciences Center and internships from SDSU, Augustana, and USF.

Sioux Metro Growth Alliance – Serving the regional communities outside of Sioux Falls, SMGA provides support and guidance, connecting them to valuable resources they need to capitalize on the growth and success of the region.

There are, of course, many individuals and business leaders that play a critical role in forming our boards and committees; providing valuable guidance and expertise. Without these valued relationships, we could not be where we are today.

On behalf of the Development Foundation Board of Directors and staff, we say thank you to our partners and the individuals who contribute their time, talent, and treasure to our organization. You are all awesome.
