According to the American Dream Composite Index developed by researchers at Xavier University, South Dakota ranked No. 1. The index measures 35 distinct areas across five categories to provide a statistically validated measurement quantifying the American Dream in its entirety – noting the American Dream is a collection of millions of individual dreams across the nation. Categories include economics, health and well-being, large-scale and long-term societal issues, diversity and the physical environment.
The state indexes 105.9 versus national average on resident perception of overall attainment of their American Dream. The result is statistically significant and South Dakota is the No. 1 state in the country where residents feel they can achieve their American Dream.
