Workforce Training

There is better training for our workforce in Sioux Falls. A multitude of options are available to meet businesses' needs at both the high school and postsecondary levels including city programs, state grants, technical training, and a new $50 million scholarship program for technical school students.

  •  • Individual businesses are offering more internships and apprenticeship programs to attract new workers and develop existing employees through certificates and licensures.

  •  • Promotes the national Manufacturing Institute initiative of “Dream It. Do It. Creating the Manufacturing Experience for the Next Generation” which serves to change the perception of the industry and inspire next generation workers to pursue manufacturing careers.     •   • Manufacturing Day is another, but we haven’t really got the ball rolling with students yet.
  •  • Hosted a Manufacturers’ Day Summit to bring together industry experts to educate manufacturers on industry trends and provide tools and resources for South Dakota manufacturers to learn, grow and excel in the manufacturing industry. Every year they host a Manufacturing Summit, which is open to all manufacturers, business professionals, and students interested in learning about best practices and the latest manufacturing trends.
  • South Dakota Governor's Office of Economic Development Workforce Development Program
  •  • Provides grants for technical training for both new and existing employees.
  •  • Companies must meet specific criteria in order to participate in the program.
  •  • Grants cover up to 50% of eligible training expenses.
  • Build Dakota
  •  • New scholarship program created through a $50 million investment: $25M from T. Denny Sanford plus $25M from the South Dakota Future Fund.
  •  • Awarded to students entering high-need workforce programs at technical institutes.
  •  • Recipients of the scholarship will commit to living and working in South Dakota, in the field of their study, for 3 years following graduation.
  •  • Projected that the program will award 300 scholarships/year for the first 5 years.
  •  • Two technical institutes in the region are participating in this program: Mitchell Technical Institute and Southeast Technical Institute.
  • Area technical institutes offer various 2-year programs that provide skills for success in technical careers.
